Checkups and cleanings

A routine visit: the dentist looks at your teeth and gums, and a cleaning removes plaque and tartar. It is for adults who want small problems found while they are small.

  • One visit, usually about an hour.

What happens

The visit, in order

  1. 01

    Step 1: You talk

A few minutes on what you've noticed and what you'd like to know.

  2. 02

    Step 2: Dr. Barksdale examines

She checks your teeth, gums and bite, and takes X-rays only if she needs them.

  3. 03

    Step 3: A cleaning

Plaque and tartar are removed above and below the gum line.

  4. 04

Step 4: You hear what she found

What looks healthy, what to watch, and when to come back. Most adults come back every six months; she sets the interval for you.

Good to know

Comfort, waiting, risks and billing

  • Comfort

A cleaning can leave your gums tender. If something is sensitive, say so and we slow down or numb the area. You can ask for a break at any time.

  • If you wait

If you skip visits, small problems can grow into ones that cost more to fix. You decide; Dr. Barksdale tells you what she sees.

  • Risks and after-care

Some tenderness or light bleeding after a cleaning is common and fades in a day or two. Call us if it doesn't, or if it gets worse.

  • How it's billed

Two exams and two cleanings are in the Seagrape Plan's yearly price. If you pay per visit, the fee is quoted in writing before we start.

Questions

Questions about checkups and cleanings

How often should I come?

Dr. Barksdale decides after your first exam. For many adults it's twice a year, and she'll tell you if you need more or fewer.

Will I need X-rays?

Only when she needs them to see something the exam can't show. She tells you why.

What is a deep cleaning?

A cleaning below the gum line for gums that show signs of disease. It's quoted in writing first, since it's beyond a routine cleaning.

Is a cleaning part of the plan?

Yes, two a year. Anything else is quoted before we start.
